One Indonesian dies from stab wound in Johor Bahru, five others face murder charges
A violent altercation among Indonesian workers in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, has left one dead and five others detained. The fatal incident occurred at a palm oil plantation in the Kluang district on Saturday, June 7, 2025.
Fatal Stabbing in Kluang Plantation
In the early hours of Saturday, June 7, 2025, a deadly dispute erupted among Indonesian migrant workers in a palm oil estate located in Paloh village, Kluang district, Johor. One Indonesian national, identified as SR (28), succumbed to a stab wound in the chest. Malaysian authorities confirmed that the victim died shortly after being transported to Enche’ Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital.
Fast Police Action, Five Arrests Made

According to Kluang District Police Chief Bahrin Mohd Noh, a joint police team from multiple departments launched an immediate investigation. Within 24 hours, five Indonesian nationals—aged between 21 and 31—were arrested in connection with the incident. All suspects are legal migrant workers employed in the plantation sector.
No Criminal Records, Motive Still Unknown
Initial background checks confirmed that none of the five suspects have prior criminal records. Urine tests also revealed no traces of narcotics. Police are still investigating the motive, although preliminary findings suggest the stabbing followed a heated argument between the victim and the accused. The case is being pursued under Section 302 of the Malaysian Penal Code, which carries the death penalty for murder.
Indonesia Provides Consular Support
Judha Nugraha, Director for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens at Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that the Indonesian Consulate General in Johor Bahru (KJRI) has been actively coordinating with local authorities. SR’s body is currently being held at Enche’ Khalsom Hospital and is scheduled to be repatriated to Indonesia on June 10, 2025. Meanwhile, the consulate has requested consular access to the five detained citizens.
Legal Process Underway
The suspects are currently being held at Kluang Police Station for further investigation, with an initial detention period of seven days. KJRI Johor Bahru and the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur (KBRI) are closely monitoring the legal proceedings and ensuring the detained workers receive proper legal and consular assistance.
Growing Concern Over Migrant Welfare
This incident underscores the ongoing need for conflict resolution support and legal protection for Indonesian migrant workers in Malaysia. While the suspects were legal workers, the tragedy exposes underlying tensions that can exist in high-pressure working environments far from home.
This tragic case serves as a stark reminder of the social and legal vulnerabilities migrant workers may face abroad. It calls for strengthened bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and Malaysia to ensure worker safety, prevent workplace violence, and uphold justice for all involved.
