On May 21, 2025, the Indonesian National Narcotics Agency (BNN) intercepted a vessel carrying 2 tons of methamphetamine in the waters of the Riau Islands. The operation was the result of joint intelligence and maritime surveillance involving BNN, the Indonesian Navy, and customs authorities.

The meth, packed in tea packaging, is estimated to have a street value exceeding IDR 3 trillion (approx. SGD 240 million). The drugs were believed to be en route from the Golden Triangle region, destined for distribution across Southeast Asia.

The operation led to the arrest of six men onboard the vessel—four Indonesians and two foreign nationals whose identities remain undisclosed. According to BNN Chief, Marthinus Hukom, the suspects could face capital punishment under Indonesia’s strict anti-narcotics laws.
