Dozens of employees protest after abrupt hotel closure, demanding their unpaid rights and clarity.
Harmoni Suites Hotel in Batam shocked the community by suddenly closing operations, leaving dozens of workers without notice or clear compensation. Tensions escalated as employees staged a protest demanding their rightful entitlements.
Sudden Closure Sparks Uproar
On May 15, 2025, the workers’ union at Harmoni Suites Hotel submitted a formal strike notice to the management, following internal dissatisfaction. Shockingly, just one day later, on May 16, the management responded—not with a mediation offer—but with a sudden letter announcing the hotel’s permanent closure effective May 21, 2025.
Robin Leonard, Head of the Harmoni Suites Hotel Workers’ Union, expressed disbelief. “There was no explanation, no dialogue. We followed procedures, but they slammed the door on us,” he said during the protest held Friday morning, May 23.

Workers Left In The Dark
On the morning of May 23, more than 50 employees staged a peaceful protest outside the locked gates of the hotel. The once-bustling property stood eerily empty. Several guests, including long-stay patrons, were turned away or abruptly relocated, with no advance notice.
Robin emphasized that, although Indonesian law permits business closures, it requires due process: negotiations with employees, severance planning, and transparency. “This was done unilaterally. Our rights are unclear, and we haven’t even met with the management,” he stated.
Legal Obligations Ignored
The workers argue that the closure did not follow legal procedures under Indonesia’s Labor Law. There were no prior consultations or written agreements on severance pay, service compensation, or the final status of employment. Many affected staff had served the hotel for over a decade.
Robin reiterated, “Even if the owner has legal grounds to shut down, the law mandates a transparent process. None of this was honored by Harmoni Suites.”

Guests Shocked As Hotel Empties
Adding to the chaos, long-stay guests were caught off guard. Some were transferred to other hotels without prior notice. By the time of the protest, the hotel was completely vacant, with no active bookings or operations visible.
The ripple effect of the sudden closure is felt not just by the employees but also by Batam’s hospitality reputation, especially as the island depends heavily on tourism from Singapore and regional travelers.
First Mediation Attempt Fails
A mediation session involving workers, hotel management, and the Batam Manpower Office (Disnaker) was held during the protest but ended without resolution.A second session is scheduled for Monday, May 26, 2025, at 10:00 AM at the Disnaker Batam office.
The closure of Harmoni Suites Hotel exposes systemic weaknesses in labor protection within Indonesia’s hospitality sector. With dozens of livelihoods disrupted, the incident is a wake-up call for stronger legal safeguards and transparent business practices—especially vital in Batam, a key tourism link between Indonesia and Singapore.
