Officers were returning from a crowd control assignment when their vehicle collided with a lorry

Malaysia is mourning the loss of nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) officers after a devastating road accident in Perak, which left nine others injured and authorities scrambling for answers.

The accident occurred on the morning of May 13, when a vehicle carrying 18 officers from Malaysia’s Federal Reserve Unit collided head-on with a lorry transporting rocks near Teluk Intan, Perak. The officers had just completed crowd control duties at the Chitra Pournami Festival and were returning to Ipoh. Eight victims were declared dead at the scene, while a ninth succumbed to injuries at the hospital, according to Hilir Perak police chief ACP Dr Bakri Zainal Abidin.

Witnesses recounted scenes of confusion and desperation. Survivors from a second FRU vehicle rushed to assist, shouting and administering first aid. A food vendor nearby said she saw a white van exiting a junction moments before the crash, prompting the lorry to swerve and collide with the FRU truck, which overturned on impact. One survivor described the scene as “pure chaos,” with cries for help echoing along the road.

Victims and Hospitalised Officers Identified

The FRU vehicle was carrying 18 people, including the driver. According to Bukit Aman’s Internal Security and Public Order Department director Comm Datuk Azmi Abu Kassim, five officers remain seriously injured, while four others are recovering. The deceased, aged between 28 and 46, include Sergeant S. Perumal, Corporal Nurit Pandak, Corporal Amiruddin Zabri, and five others whose names have been released. Post-mortems were conducted before funeral prayers at the Hilir Perak District Police HQ surau.

Driver Detained, Drugs Test Negative

The driver of the lorry, who survived unscathed, has been detained for questioning. Initial drug tests came back negative, but police stress that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the crash. Authorities have urged anyone with information to contact the local police, as forensic teams work to reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the collision.

National Grief and Institutional Loss

Datuk Azmi expressed deep condolences, calling the deaths a “huge loss” to the police force and the nation. “These brave officers died in the line of duty,” he said, adding that all necessary support will be extended to the victims’ families. The Royal Malaysia Police have pledged to prioritize the welfare of next of kin, including financial assistance and post-trauma care for the survivors.

Questions on Road Safety and Prevention

This tragedy has sparked broader questions about the safety protocols for transporting large police units, especially along rural or high-traffic roads. Analysts are calling for improved safety checks, clearer coordination between escort units, and enhanced driver training to reduce future risks. As public mourning continues, the need for preventive policy reform becomes ever more urgent to protect those who serve on the front lines of national security.

The crash that claimed nine lives in Teluk Intan stands as a somber reminder of the dangers faced by frontline officers beyond the call of conflict. As Malaysians grieve, the tragedy underscores the need for thorough investigation and policy reforms to ensure the safety of security personnel in transit. The nation must honour their sacrifice not only in remembrance but in action.
