Batu Ampar Container Terminal boosts efficiency, global port links, and launches third direct international call
The transformation of Batu Ampar Container Terminal (TPK Batu Ampar) in Batam has delivered a 500% productivity boost and redefined the city’s role in global logistics, following state-owned investment and infrastructure upgrades spearheaded by holding company BUMN Danareksa.
State-owned holding company PT Danareksa (Persero), through PT Perusahaan Pengelola Aset (PPA), has initiated a sweeping transformation of Persero Batam, the operator of TPK Batu Ampar.
According to Rizwan Rizal Abidin, Director of Investment 2 at Danareksa, the port’s performance has surged following infrastructure works that began in 2023, yielding a 500% increase in container productivity and a 57% reduction in logistics costs.
TPK Batu Ampar is now integrated with 20 international ports, elevating Batam’s position in the global supply chain and enhancing its readiness to support large-scale international shipping operations.
“This is part of our national effort to position Indonesia as a key player in global maritime trade,” Rizwan said in a statement released on May 7, 2025.
After launching two successful direct calls in 2024, TPK Batu Ampar completed its third international voyage on April 30, 2025, with the MV Ever Core sailing from Batam to China.
This direct connectivity reduces reliance on transshipment hubs in Singapore or Malaysia and strengthens Batam’s logistics independence and regional competitiveness.
Rizwan added that these routes demonstrate the high logistics potential of Batam and accelerate its transformation into a national transshipment port. He emphasized the government’s ambition to integrate Batam into a broader regional trade network under Prabowo Subianto’s maritime economic vision.

Long-Term Port Expansion in Motion
Development plans for TPK Batu Ampar include expanding terminal capacity to 2.1 million TEUs by 2028.
The roadmap involves building 1,600 meters of quay wall, deepening the channel to 16 meters, and developing a 31-hectare container yard to accommodate global-standard cargo vessels.
In addition to sea freight, air-cargo infrastructure is also under consideration. Persero Batam aims to leverage 90 daily flights for cargo handling and diversify its logistics services into steel, liquid bulk, and multi-purpose cargo.
Economic Ripple Effects and Job Creation
The Batu Ampar transformation is expected to stimulate industrial growth in nearby areas such as Tanjung Uncang and Tanjung Pinggir.
It will not only attract global port operators and investors but also create new employment opportunities and spur the development of auxiliary industries in the Riau Islands.
Rizwan highlighted that transparent, competitive partnerships with global logistics players will further uplift service standards, aligning with good governance principles.
He invited stakeholders to participate to shaping Batam as a maritime and industrial epicentre for the region.
Backbone of Indonesia’s Maritime Vision
TPK Batu Ampar’s revitalization serves as a showcase for Indonesia’s state-led port reform model.
Danareksa’s role as a multisector transformation-focused BUMN underscores the national push to modernize critical infrastructure beyond Java. The success of Batu Ampar demonstrates what strategic alignment between the government, SOEs, and private partners can achieve in repositioning Indonesia within global trade networks.
With continued momentum, Batam is well-positioned to become a regional logistics powerhouse. The revitalisation of TPK Batu Ampar marks a turning point for Batam and Indonesia’s maritime future.
As direct calls, port upgrades, and international integration unfold, Batam is rapidly stepping into its role as a vital logistics and industrial gateway for Southeast Asia.
