Wife of murdered civil servant says accusations of bullying are false and damaging

The wife of Hafiz Rinanda, a 29-year-old civil servant fatally stabbed by his coworker, has spoken out publicly to defend her late husband from what she described as a false and hurtful narrative. Nelma Yanti, speaking through her Instagram account, refuted widespread social media claims that the murder was provoked by prolonged workplace bullying.

According to Nelma, there had been no prior disputes between her husband and the alleged killer, Faras Kausar, who worked as a contract staff member at Batam’s Public Works and Spatial Planning Office (Dinas Cipta Karya). “They were even family. There was no history of conflict,” she wrote. Nelma stressed that such allegations only emerged minutes after the murder and should not be taken as fact.

Victim Allegedly Approached Suspect Peacefully Before Incident

Nelma shared that Hafiz and Faras had exchanged well wishes just before the fatal incident on April 14, 2025. “My husband even called out to him to say ‘sorry if I’ve ever done anything wrong’ earlier that day,” she added, indicating that relations between them were amicable.

The murder reportedly occurred inside their shared workplace. Faras allegedly brought a knife purchased from a local store and fatally attacked Hafiz, prompting his immediate arrest by police.

Viral Allegations a ‘Desperate Defense’

In her statement, Nelma emphasized that the widespread reports portraying Hafiz as a bully were an attempt by the perpetrator to justify his actions. “My husband has not only been murdered but now he is being slandered when he can no longer defend himself,” she said, calling the narrative a “desperate defense” by the suspect.

She urged the public and media outlets to stop sharing one-sided or unverified information and to respect the grief of her family. “I beg you to stop spreading misinformation. We are devastated enough,” she pleaded.

Police have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, with the suspect currently in custody and the murder weapon recovered. Authorities are working to determine the motive behind the killing. As of now, no formal confirmation has been made about the claim of bullying as the cause.

Faras previously told investigators he was driven to commit the act due to long-term harassment, a statement the victim’s family calls unfounded and misleading.

The case has sparked public debate about workplace violence, mental health, and the ethical responsibility of media and individuals in reporting sensitive cases. Legal experts have cautioned against accepting unverified claims at face value, especially when the accused has a vested interest in shaping the public narrative.
