Nine arrested, weapons and drugs seized; motive believed to be revenge over gang rivalry

A deadly shooting at a restaurant in Taman Setia Indah, Johor Bahru, on January 8 has been officially linked to secret society violence, with police identifying revenge as the likely motive. The 40-year-old victim was shot at close range by a suspect who fled the scene on a motorcycle. The case has prompted the formation of a special task force, including Bukit Aman officers, as investigations widen to uncover the full network behind the killing.

According to Johor police chief Comm Datuk M. Kumar, the shooting stemmed from escalating tensions between rival secret societies. He confirmed at a press conference on March 27 that nine suspects were currently in remand and that one or two more individuals were still being pursued. The victim was confirmed to have died from a chest gunshot wound following a post-mortem examination. The case has stirred public concern over organised crime resurfacing in Johor Bahru.

Operation Uncovers Weapons and Narcotics

Police operations following the murder have resulted in several arrests and the recovery of firearms, ammunition, and drugs. On March 8, a shootout in Taman Molek led to the death of a 64-year-old suspect. At the scene, officers seized a Smith & Wesson pistol, live bullets, and drug-related paraphernalia. Shortly after, six men aged between 48 and 66 were arrested in a raid on a residence in Jalan Ah Siang, where heroin and a digital weighing scale were found.

More Suspects Caught in Second Raid

A second operation on March 17 along Jalan Bukit Meldrum led to the arrest of three more suspects, aged 36 to 62. Officers seized a semi-automatic Sig Sauer pistol and two cartridge cases containing 15 bullets. Ballistic tests confirmed that casings and bullets recovered from the crime scene match one of the seized weapons, further linking the shooting to the suspects in custody.

Organised Crime and Public Safety Concerns

This case has reignited concerns over the presence of organised crime groups operating in Johor. The strategic use of firearms, coordination among suspects, and possession of narcotics signal the potential scale of the operation. Comm Kumar assured that the police would continue to dismantle the group’s network and prevent further acts of retaliation or violence from unfolding in the state.

As Johor police deepen their investigation into this gang-related murder, the public is reminded of the risks secret societies pose to community safety. With firearms in circulation and revenge killings escalating, law enforcement’s swift action is crucial in curbing further unrest and protecting residents, especially in urban hotspots like Johor Bahru.
