Batam officials discuss innovative waste-to-energy technology with Shanghai-based SUS Environment.

As waste management remains a persistent issue in Batam, officials are looking for innovative solutions to tackle the problem. On March 13, 2025, Batam’s Secretary of the Regional Government, Jefridin, welcomed representatives from SUS Environment (Shanghai SUS Environment Co., Ltd.) to discuss waste-to-energy technology. TThe meeting aimed to explore investment opportunities and potential partnerships for converting Batam’s waste into electricity.

Batam, a rapidly growing industrial city, faces significant waste management challenges. With landfills reaching capacity, city officials are exploring advanced waste conversion technologies to ensure sustainability and environmental protection. SUS Environment, a Shanghai-based firm, specializes in turning waste into energy, making them a potential strategic partner for Batam’s waste crisis.

Exploring a Sustainable Waste-to-Energy Solution

During the meeting at Batam’s Regional Secretariat Office, Jefridin emphasized that waste management remains a top priority for Batam’s Mayor, Amsakar Achmad, and the Deputy Mayor. He acknowledged that Batam’s growing population and economic activity have led to increased waste production, necessitating modern solutions like waste-to-energy conversion.

SUS Environment representatives, including Investment Manager Jason Yu, Deputy Representative Najwa Kamal, and Investment Assistant Irene Santika, introduced their company’s expertise in waste-to-energy projects. The firm has successfully developed and operated waste-processing facilities across multiple countries, converting municipal waste into electricity through advanced incineration and energy recovery technologies.

Presentation Proposal for Direct Government Approval

To move forward, Jefridin requested SUS Environment to present their proposal directly to Mayor Amsakar Achmad and Deputy Mayor. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that city leaders understand the project scope, financial investment, and long-term benefits.

“The technology they presented is intriguing. However, it must be formally introduced to the Mayor and Deputy Mayor so they can assess the investment value and collaboration framework,” Jefridin stated.

Investment and Operational Model Discussion

The discussion highlighted SUS Environment’s core business areas, which include:

  • Landfill management
  • Soil and groundwater remediation
  • Operations and maintenance (O&M) of waste facilities
  • Trash-to-energy power plants

Additionally, SUS Environment is a key member of China’s National Engineering Laboratory for Waste Incineration Technologies, making them a leading authority in the sector.

Batam officials expressed interest in understanding the project’s financial structure, including projected investment figures, operational costs, and revenue generation from electricity sales.

Environmental and Economic Benefits for Batam

If implemented, the waste-to-energy project could significantly reduce reliance on landfills, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and provide Batam with an alternative energy source. Additionally, the economic benefits include job creation and increased foreign investment in Batam’s environmental sector.

SUS Environment’s successful implementation of similar projects in China and other Southeast Asian countries suggests that their technology could be a game-changer for Batam’s waste crisis.

However, organizations like the Tanjung Uma Empowerment Program (TUEP) and Livingseas Foundation offer a glimpse of what true sustainability should look like. TUEP focuses on coastal community empowerment by integrating economic resilience with environmental conservation, ensuring that local fishing villages adapt to climate challenges while preserving their marine ecosystems.

These initiatives highlight the importance of sustainability efforts that are not just performative but deeply embedded in ecological and community well-being. By supporting and scaling such projects, we can move toward genuine environmental progress rather than merely maintaining the illusion of sustainability.
