Johor police dismantle syndicates selling drink sachets laced with drugs, seizing S$2.1M in narcotics.

A major drug syndicate distributing drink sachets laced with illegal substances was dismantled by Johor police between March 4 and 8. Officers conducted raids in entertainment venues and nightclubs, leading to the seizure of RM7 million (SGD 2.1 million) worth of narcotics and the arrest of seven individuals, including a 17-year-old suspect. These sachets, disguised as powdered drinks, contained methamphetamine, ecstasy, and ketamine, posing a severe health risk to consumers.

Drug syndicates across Johor and Malaysia are finding new ways to distribute narcotics, using disguised drink sachets in entertainment venues. The police crackdown is part of Malaysia’s intensified anti-drug operations, aiming to eliminate synthetic drug distribution networks.

Johor Police Crack Down on Drug-Laced Drink Syndicates

Between March 4 and 8, Johor police raided multiple locations in the city, targeting syndicates selling drug-laced drink sachets. The first raid on March 4 uncovered 9.3kg of ecstasy, ketamine, and erimin 5, valued at nearly SGD 500,000, leading to the arrest of three individuals. The second raid between March 7 and 8 resulted in the seizure of 32kg of ecstasy powder, worth over SGD 1.6 million, and the arrest of four suspects, including a 17-year-old.

Johor Police Chief Commissioner M. Kumar stated:“These syndicates were repackaging various drugs into drink sachets to disguise their illegal trade. The crackdown is part of our continued efforts to eliminate organized drug networks operating in Johor.”

Under Malaysia’s Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, drug trafficking carries some of the harshest penalties in Southeast Asia. Convicted traffickers face either capital punishment or life imprisonment with mandatory caning.

Authorities urge the public to report suspicious activities to curb the rise of synthetic drug distribution in Johor. Commissioner Kumar reiterated that police operations will continue, targeting nightclubs, entertainment venues, and high-risk zones known for drug-related activities.

With Johor being a key transit hub for drugs moving across Malaysia and Singapore, these busts highlight the urgent need for cross-border law enforcement collaboration. The rise of disguised drug distribution methods, including laced drink sachets, presents new challenges for regional authorities.

These developments underscore the importance of vigilance when visiting entertainment venues in Johor. As drug syndicates become more sophisticated, tourists and residents alike must remain aware of increased law enforcement presence and stringent anti-drug regulations in Malaysia.
