Indonesia aims to enhance Batam’s maritime industry, strengthen connectivity, and boost economic growth.
The Indonesian government is intensifying efforts to transform Batam into a globally competitive industrial hub. In a high-level coordination meeting held on March 12, 2025, Batam Indonesia Free Zone Authority (BP Batam) Chief and Batam Mayor Amsakar Achmad discussed strategic plans to expand the Batam-Bintan-Karimun industrial corridor, improve maritime connectivity, and establish a new Batam-Johor ferry route operated by PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry (Persero).
The meeting took place at Balairungsari BP Batam and was hosted by the Indonesian Presidential Staff Office (KSP) to align national priority programs with Batam’s development agenda. Discussions focused on economic expansion, transport infrastructure, and shipbuilding, reinforcing Batam’s role as a leading industrial and trade hub in the Riau Islands Province (Kepri).
Economic Transformation Through Connectivity
During his speech, Amsakar Achmad emphasized that Batam has demonstrated strong economic growth in recent years, surpassing both the Riau Islands Province and national economic averages. He stated:
“If the national economic target is 8%, Batam is expected to exceed this and significantly contribute to the broader development of Riau Islands and Indonesia.“
Amsakar also highlighted the importance of integrated policies to boost Batam’s industrial competitiveness, making it a prime destination for foreign investment and manufacturing activities.
The meeting was attended by key Indonesian officials, including Presidential Chief of Staff (Ret.) Lt. Gen. AM Putranto, who reaffirmed President Prabowo Subianto’s Asta Cita vision—an economic roadmap for Indonesia’s growth leading to 2045.
“Batam’s strategic position allows it to serve as the economic epicenter of Riau Islands and beyond. Our joint efforts will drive stronger industrial development and connectivity,” Putranto said after the meeting.
The meeting also addressed the importance of regional cooperation to enhance Batam’s global trade status. Plans to modernize shipbuilding and expand the Batam-Johor ferry route were highlighted as key steps in solidifying Batam’s economic integration with Southeast Asia.

Shipbuilding and Maritime Industry Development
With shipbuilding and maritime trade being core industries in Batam, the Indonesian government is pushing for further investments and infrastructure improvements. Antoni Arif Priadi, Director-General of Sea Transportation, and Heru Widodo, Director of ASDP Indonesia Ferry, shared updates on future ferry operations and shipbuilding projects that will support the Batam-Bintan-Karimun industrial zone.
In addition, security and regulatory measures were discussed, with Riau Islands Police Chief Irjen Pol Asep Safrudin and Brig. Gen. Bambang Herqutanto from Korem 033 Wira Pratama ensuring that maritime activities align with Indonesia’s national security interests.
Strategic Location and Future Outlook
Batam’s geographical advantage makes it a strategic gateway for trade between Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia. The government aims to position Batam as a leading maritime and logistics center, creating jobs and attracting foreign direct investment.
Governor of Riau Islands, Ansar Ahmad, emphasized the importance of stakeholder collaboration in realizing Batam’s long-term industrial growth. Vice Governor Nyanyang Harris Pratamura echoed this sentiment, stressing that the synergy between local and national governments is crucial to achieving Indonesia’s economic vision.
Batam’s transformation into a major maritime and industrial hub offers new opportunities for Singaporean businesses and investors. Enhanced transportation links, improved shipbuilding infrastructure, and a growing industrial base will foster stronger economic ties between Batam and Singapore.
The expansion of the Batam-Johor ferry route could also improve regional connectivity, facilitating greater trade, tourism, and investment flows between Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.
