Indonesian Navy intercepts illegal migrant transport from Malaysia to Batam, arresting key suspects
The Indonesian Navy’s Bintan Naval Base (Lanal Bintan) successfully intercepted an attempt to smuggle illegal Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) from Malaysia to Batam through the Riau Strait. Acting on a tip-off, authorities apprehended six suspects, including four reconnaissance operatives and a key smuggler known as M. The migrants and suspects were detained, and further investigations are underway.
On February 25, 2025, the Indonesian Navy foiled an illegal migration attempt in the waters of the Riau Strait. Intelligence reports suggested that a group of migrants was being transported from Malaysia to Batam, disguised as fishermen. Lanal Bintan’s Fleet One Quick Response (F1QR) team immediately launched a patrol operation, tracking suspicious speedboats navigating the area.
Authorities first spotted a suspicious speedboat moving through the Riau Strait on the night of February 24. Upon interception, officers found two individuals acting as scouts, responsible for monitoring naval patrols and ensuring a safe passage for the smugglers. Further investigation led to another speedboat, where two additional scouts were caught conducting surveillance for the main operation.
Following their interrogation, the detainees revealed they were working under an individual known as M. In a subsequent search at dawn on February 25, the naval team located another speedboat carrying two illegal migrants bound for Batam. The boat was scheduled to drop them off near Barelang Bridge I, where they were expected to disembark undetected.

Authorities then moved to capture the smuggling mastermind. M was tracked down and apprehended along with a third speedboat. During questioning, he admitted to orchestrating multiple smuggling operations, successfully transporting six illegal migrants from Batam to Malaysia and returning with two others. He also confessed to having carried out similar smuggling missions four times prior.
In the operation, law enforcement officers confiscated three unregistered speedboats, multiple mobile phones, and a total of 11 ecstasy pills, which were found in the possession of the smugglers. Additionally, four mobile phones belonging to the scouts were seized as part of the ongoing investigation.
Authorities confirmed that the two illegal migrants would be handed over to the Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection Agency (BP2MI) in the Riau Islands. Meanwhile, the arrested smugglers face legal prosecution under Indonesia’s anti-trafficking and immigration laws.
This successful operation underscores the Indonesian government’s commitment to curbing human smuggling and protecting its migrant workers. The case also highlights the persistent challenges in border security between Indonesia and Malaysia. Stricter monitoring and increased naval patrols remain essential in addressing illegal migration and preventing similar incidents.
