Batam police arrest five suspects involved in separate motorcycle theft cases across the city.

Batam, Indonesia – Police in Sagulung, Batam, have arrested five individuals involved in separate motorcycle theft cases, with the stolen vehicles sold to fund gambling habits and personal leisure. The suspects, aged between 17 and 23, were apprehended during a series of operations conducted in late January and early February 2025.

The city of Batam, a bustling economic hub in Indonesia’s Riau Islands, has seen a rise in motorcycle theft cases. The local police in Sagulung district launched targeted operations to curb the growing trend, resulting in multiple arrests. This case sheds light on the connection between petty crimes, gambling addiction, and youth delinquency in the region.

Five Arrested in Batam Motorcycle Theft Crackdown

According to IPTU Anwar Aris, Head of Criminal Investigation at Sagulung Police, five suspects were arrested:

1. MH (23)
2. SA (17)
3. ET (23)
4. BR (21)
5. RL (20)

The arrests occurred between 26 January and 3 February 2025. While the suspects operated separately, they shared similar methods, including breaking motorcycle handlebars and hot-wiring ignition cables to steal the vehicles.

Minor Repeat Offender Involved in 11 Thefts

One suspect, SA (17), was identified as a repeat offender with 11 theft cases recorded throughout January 2025. Despite recently being released after serving an 8-month sentence for the same crime, SA resumed criminal activities. The stolen motorcycles were sold for IDR 1.5–2 million (approximately SGD 125–166), with proceeds used for gambling and leisure.

Stolen Motorcycles Sold Through Illicit Networks

Two suspects, ET and BR, were caught during a cash-on-delivery (COD) transaction involving a stolen motorcycle in Simpang Basecamp, Sagulung. The duo confessed to stealing motorcycles on order from a buyer known as “Mas Hand.” Their method involved breaking the handlebars and using pre-prepared sockets to start the engines.

Motive Behind the Crimes: Gambling and Leisure

Police revealed that the primary motive behind the thefts was to obtain quick cash for gambling activities, particularly online slot games, and personal indulgence. MH, another suspect, admitted that his theft was driven by a need to finance his gambling addiction.

The suspects face charges under Indonesia’s Aggravated Theft Law, carrying a potential sentence of 7 to 9 years in prison. For SA, as a minor, legal proceedings will follow the Juvenile Justice System Act. Police are still pursuing additional suspects, including known repeat offenders.

This case underscores the importance of vehicle security and awareness of local crime trends. The arrests highlight the link between petty crimes and gambling addiction, a growing concern in Southeast Asia. Cross-border collaborations between law enforcement agencies may be necessary to address the broader network of organized crime affecting both Indonesia and its neighboring countries.
