Singapore’s Police Coast Guard (PCG) has introduced new high-tech equipment to strengthen maritime security operations. During a demonstration at the Brani Regional Base on January 22, 2025, the Special Task Squadron (STS) showcased an unsinkable drone and a hull-climbing robot designed to improve surveillance, ship boarding, and tactical response. These innovations mark a significant advancement in maritime law enforcement, offering greater efficiency and safety in high-risk operations such as piracy interventions and covert insertions.

Diodon: An Unsinkable Surveillance

The Diodon drone, a French-made amphibious surveillance device, has been designed to withstand harsh maritime conditions. With its inflatable and rugged build, the 2kg drone remains unsinkable, even if it lands upside down in the water. The device can self-right and take off again, ensuring continuous operational effectiveness. It can fly up to 4km and provide real-time surveillance footage, giving tactical commanders a clearer view of ongoing threats. Already in use by military forces in Denmark, Britain, and France, the drone is currently being evaluated by Singapore’s Home Team Science and Technology Agency’s Robotics, Automation, and Unmanned Systems Centre of Expertise (HTX Raus CoE) for local maritime security applications.

During the demonstration, the Diodon was deployed to monitor a simulated pirate attack. As divers from the STS approached the targeted ship from below, the drone provided live aerial footage, helping commanders assess the situation and coordinate an effective response. The ability to maneuver through complex maritime environments without the limitations of traditional surveillance equipment has been hailed as a major advantage for maritime law enforcement.

Spyder: A Magnetic Hull-Climbing Robot for Tactical Boarding

In addition to aerial surveillance, the demonstration highlighted the operational use of the Spyder hull-climbing robot. Designed by HTX Raus CoE, the Spyder uses magnetic tracks to attach itself to a ship’s hull and climb vertically to the upper deck. This wireless system allows for rapid and stealthy boarding, a crucial capability in high-risk maritime operations. Unlike traditional methods that require officers to manually place a hook and ladder, the Spyder can autonomously deploy a caving ladder, improving efficiency and reducing physical exertion for operatives.

During the drill, the robot took approximately three minutes to ascend the ship’s hull and secure a boarding ladder. Once the hook was properly engaged, STS officers used the ladder to climb aboard undetected. Equipped with real-time surveillance cameras, the Spyder also provided tactical intelligence, allowing officers to monitor the deck before making their approach. The system has been praised for reducing operational risks, particularly in rough sea conditions where manual boarding techniques can be dangerous and time-consuming.
