Tourists claim bus theft suspicious; driver and guide statements under scrutiny.
A group of Singaporean tourists lost over S$15,000 worth of belongings during an 11-day European tour. Their luggage, containing luxury goods, was stolen from a tour bus in Milan, sparking questions over security lapses and conflicting statements from the tour guide and bus driver.
The incident occurred on December 23, 2024, during a tour organized by Singapore-based EU Holidays. Five tourists, including 38-year-old Jenny Huang and 52-year-old Li Meiling, were among those affected. Despite reassurances from the tour guide about bus safety, their belongings were stolen while they dined in Milan.
The Incident in Milan
During a dinner stop at 9:00 pm, the group left their belongings on the bus, as advised by the tour guide. Upon returning at 10:00 pm, Jenny Huang discovered her luggage, including a newly purchased Yves Saint Laurent bag worth S$3,695 (RM12,500), was missing. Li Meiling lost a Fendi handbag, Tag Heuer watch, and a Louis Vuitton wallet, totaling over S$13,500 (RM45,000).

Huang and Li noted suspicious circumstances surrounding the theft. The bus showed no signs of forced entry, and the driver claimed the door was faulty. Contradictory statements from the driver, who alternately said he stayed on the bus and briefly stepped out, deepened their doubts.
Delayed Police Reporting
The tourists were advised to return to the hotel instead of filing a police report immediately. They reported the theft the next morning, which added to their frustration. Both victims believed quicker action might have increased the chances of recovering their belongings.
EU Holidays denied the guide’s alleged assurance that the bus was the safest place for valuables. The company clarified that travelers were briefed to take responsibility for their belongings and offered limited support for insurance claims.

Huang’s insurance claim was rejected, and she plans to appeal. Li received only S$675 (RM2,250) as compensation, far below her losses. Both victims are exploring legal options, including claims through the Small Claims Tribunals.
This incident highlights the importance of vigilance for Singaporeans traveling abroad. While Europe remains a dream destination, ensuring proper security measures and being wary of theft risks is critical. Tour operators and travelers must work together to prevent such incidents in the future.
