Tourism Malaysia, in collaboration with Batik Air, has celebrated the inaugural flight connecting Bangkok’s Don Mueang International Airport (DMK) to Johor Bahru’s Senai International Airport (JHB). The milestone, achieved on 1 December 2024, marks a significant step in boosting regional ASEAN tourism and fostering economic and cultural ties between Malaysia and Thailand.

On 1 December 2024, Batik Air launched its new Bangkok (DMK) – Johor Bahru (JHB) route, marking a milestone in regional air travel. The route is operated by a Boeing 737-800 with daily flights (OD531), departing Bangkok at 1:45 PM and arriving in Johor Bahru at 5:15 PM.

The initiative aims to provide greater accessibility between northern Thailand and southern Malaysia, positioning Johor Bahru as a prime gateway for regional travellers.

In conjunction with the launch, Tourism Malaysia and Batik Air hosted a 3-day, 2-night familiarisation trip for Thai tour agents. This exclusive programme will:

1. Highlight Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty.
2. Encourage Thai travel agencies to create tailored packages for the Malaysian market.
3. Reinforce Johor Bahru’s appeal as a second-tier tourism destination beyond Kuala Lumpur.

Tourism Malaysia’s Director-General, Datuk Manoharan Periasamy, emphasised the importance of regional connectivity, stating:

“Strengthening connections between key ASEAN cities and emerging destinations like Johor Bahru is essential to advancing regional integration and showcasing Malaysia’s diverse offerings.”

– Generate RM147.1 billion (S$43.8 billion) in receipts.

The daily flights provide a significant boost to Johor Bahru’s tourism and economy. Key benefits include:

1. Accessibility for Thai Tourists: More travellers can explore Johor’s attractions, including Legoland Malaysia, Desaru Coast, and cultural landmarks.
2. Economic Impact: The route supports local businesses, particularly in hospitality, F&B, and retail sectors.
