Batik Air has inaugurated its first direct route connecting Johor Bahru, Malaysia, to Bangkok, Thailand, strengthening regional ties and creating new opportunities for tourism and trade. The daily service, launched on December 1, 2024, is poised to support economic growth in both cities while enhancing convenience for travelers.

The new direct route between Johor Bahru and Bangkok represents Batik Air’s commitment to fostering ASEAN connectivity. This service aligns with broader regional tourism goals and Malaysia’s efforts to position Johor as a premier business and leisure destination.

Batik Air’s inaugural flight landed at Senai International Airport on December 1, 2024, marking the official start of daily services. The route is served by Boeing 737-800 aircraft, offering 167 seats across Economy and Business classes.

Officials highlight the potential of the new route to boost Johor’s economy. Johor Unity, Heritage, and Culture Committee Chairman YB Tuan Raven Kumar Krishnasamy and Batik Air CEO Datuk Chandran Rama Muthy stressed that this connection could increase tourism spending, enhance trade, and attract Thai business investors to Johor Bahru’s economic hubs.

Thai Tourism Opportunities

Director of Tourism Johor Shahril Nizam Abdul Rahim noted the benefits for Thai entrepreneurs accessing the Johor Singapore Economic Zone (JSEZ). For leisure travelers, Johor offers attractions like Legoland Malaysia and the Bangunan Sultan Ibrahim, combining modern and heritage experiences.

Tourism Malaysia collaborated with Batik Air to host a familiarisation trip for Thai travel agents, encouraging the creation of travel packages targeting Thai tourists. This initiative aligns with Malaysia’s Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign, which aims to attract 35.6 million foreign tourists and generate MYR 147.1 billion (SGD 44.16 billion).

Market Competition and Capacity

Batik Air joins Thai AirAsia, which operates 11 flights weekly on this route. The increased seating capacity opens opportunities for travel agencies to develop packages for Thai visitors exploring Johor.
