Iskandar Puteri, Malaysia, November 20 — Johor, once known for its palm-oil plantations, has rapidly transformed into a booming hub for artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. Tech giants like ByteDance, Microsoft, and Oracle have poured billions into data centers, leveraging Johor’s proximity to Singapore and its strategic resources. The region, now dubbed an “AI Boomtown,” is on track to become one of the world’s largest data-center markets.
Johor’s transformation began three years ago when tech companies identified its potential as a data center hub. The state offers abundant land, power, and water while benefiting from its proximity to Singapore’s dense undersea internet cables. This has made Johor a prime location for global tech investments, reshaping the region into a critical player in AI infrastructure.
ByteDance has allocated US$350 million (S$472.5 million) for data centers in Johor. Microsoft purchased 123 acres for US$95 million (S$128.25 million), while Oracle announced a US$6.5 billion (S$8.775 billion) investment in Malaysia’s data-center sector. Blackstone, through AirTrunk, spent US$16 billion (S$21.6 billion) to expand its Asia-wide facilities, including Johor.

In just three years, Johor’s data-center capacity has skyrocketed from 10 megawatts to 0.34 gigawatts, with 2.6 gigawatts under construction. Analysts predict Johor could become the second-largest data-center market globally within five years, following Northern Virginia.
Johor offers vast land, coal-powered electricity, and sufficient water resources. Its proximity to Singapore’s internet cables positions it as a global hub for AI and cloud computing, serving clients far beyond Malaysia.
Streamlined permitting processes have expedited construction. However, local officials, including Johor Bahru Mayor Mohd Noorazam Osman, urge balance between economic benefits and local needs, such as addressing water shortages through desalination projects.
