In a move to enhance technological skills among young learners, Indonesia plans to introduce artificial intelligence (AI) and coding as optional subjects in elementary schools by the 2025/2026 academic year, aiming to bolster the nation’s digital literacy from an early age.
During a recent visit to Batam, Abdul Mu’ti, Indonesia’s Minister of Basic and Secondary Education, announced the forthcoming addition of AI and coding to the elementary school curriculum as elective subjects, reflecting the nation’s commitment to integrating advanced technology into education.
Starting from the 2025/2026 school year, AI and coding will be offered as optional subjects for students from at least the fourth or fifth grade, depending on the school’s capacity and available resources.

Acknowledging the digital divide, Minister Mu’ti emphasized the need for proper facilities and internet access to effectively implement these courses. He noted that not all schools are currently equipped to support such advanced subjects.
The introduction of these subjects aligns with the ‘Asta Cita’ policy framework under President Prabowo Subianto’s administration, which focuses on human resource development through science, technology, and inclusive education policies.
The discussion in Batam also covered the importance of updating teaching materials and enhancing teacher skills and welfare to support this educational shift. The government is assessing further curriculum updates to ensure alignment with these new subjects.
