In a coordinated operation, the Indonesian Navy, together with the Foreign Surveillance Task Force, intercepted an illegal smuggling attempt of two Chinese nationals from Malaysia into Batam, Indonesia. The smuggling was uncovered during a patrol operation in the Riau Strait, leading to the arrest of the suspects and thwarting their plan to cross the border undetected.

The operation was initiated by the Indonesian Navy’s Bintan Naval Base and the Foreign Surveillance Task Force after receiving intelligence indicating an imminent attempt to transport foreign nationals into Batam illegally. The coordinated patrol, conducted in the early hours of October 28, intercepted a high-speed vessel in the Riau Strait, leading to a chase before the suspects were apprehended.

Upon intercepting the boat, patrol officers identified two Chinese nationals among four people onboard, along with two Indonesian operators. The Indonesian operators, identified as AN and FN, revealed that they had been instructed by a Batam local to pick up the Chinese nationals from Malaysia’s Renggit coast, offering a payment of IDR 40,000,000 (SGD 3,400).

The smuggling attempt involved a small boat powered by an outboard motor, which attempted to evade the patrol team at high speed. Patrol officers fired three warning shots, prompting the vessel to halt. The Chinese nationals, who were reportedly bound for Batam, had been brought across the Malaysia-Indonesia border without proper immigration clearance.

Colonel Eko Agus Susanto, Commander of Bintan Naval Base, emphasized the need for stricter maritime surveillance. “We remain vigilant along high-risk routes to prevent illegal crossings and ensure border security,” he stated. Increased patrols, especially around sensitive areas, aim to address illegal activities that compromise Indonesia’s maritime borders.

Following the arrest, the Indonesian suspects are now facing immigration law violations with potential fines of IDR 200,000,000 (SGD 17,000) or a two-year prison sentence. The Chinese nationals are also at risk of criminal charges for attempting to enter Indonesia unlawfully, punishable by up to one year in prison and/or a fine of IDR 100,000,000 (SGD 8,500).

The detainees, along with the boat, were transferred to the Immigration Office in Tanjung Uban for further investigation. Meanwhile, local authorities are probing the network responsible for orchestrating these smuggling attempts, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation to combat cross-border human trafficking.

This recent operation underscores the importance of robust security measures in Indonesia’s border areas. As regional migration challenges increase, coordinated patrols like these protect ASEAN borders from illegal crossings and trafficking.

Indonesian authorities successfully intercepted an illegal smuggling attempt involving two Chinese nationals bound for Batam, following a high-speed maritime pursuit in the Riau Strait. The suspects face strict immigration penalties, underscoring Indonesia’s commitment to border security and anti-trafficking efforts.
