In the first half of 2024, Batam’s environmental management faced sharp criticism for subpar waste management services, highlighted by the Ombudsman of Kepulauan Riau citing instances of maladministration.

The Ombudsman for Kepulauan Riau pointed out significant failings in the waste management services provided by Batam’s Environmental Agency, driven by community complaints and observed inefficiencies in trash collection.

Community grievances, prominently shared on social media, include reports of trash being collected only once every ten days, despite residents paying regular sanitation fees.

Lagat Siadari, the Regional Representative of the Ombudsman, urged the Batam City Government and the Department of Environmental Affairs to enhance service quality to meet their obligations to the taxpayers.
