As Batam accelerates its infrastructure and tourism development, attracting more visitors, there’s a growing need to enhance air connectivity to and from the island. Muhammad Rudi, head of the Batam Indonesia Free Zone Authority (BP Batam), is urging airlines to initiate or increase direct flights to Batam from both domestic and international destinations to support Batam’s tourism goals of reaching pre-pandemic visitor numbers.
At the Corporate Gathering of Garuda Indonesia’s Batam Branch Office at Alio Beach Cafe & Bar, Rudi highlighted the importance of air connectivity in boosting tourism. He emphasized that air travel is the preferred mode of transport for tourists, making it crucial to increase flight operations to Batam to enhance its accessibility and popularity as a tourist destination.
Rudi expressed optimism that Batam’s 2024 tourism targets could be achieved through various efforts, including improving air connectivity. He envisions Batam becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination thanks to its rapid development and easy accessibility.

The expansion of air connectivity is anticipated to not only facilitate tourism growth but also stimulate economic development in Batam. By making the island more accessible, Batam aims to attract a higher volume of business travelers and investors, further diversifying its economic base and reinforcing its status as a dynamic hub in the region. This strategy aligns with broader goals to elevate Batam’s international profile and competitiveness in the global market.
The concerted efforts to enhance Batam’s air connectivity are a strategic response to the island’s development boom and tourism aspirations. By increasing flight frequencies and routes, Batam is set to become more accessible to both domestic and international visitors, potentially driving up tourism numbers to pre-pandemic levels and beyond.
In response to Batam’s rapid development and tourism goals, Muhammad Rudi is calling for an increase in direct flights to the island. Garuda Indonesia has already upped its Batam-Jakarta flights to four daily, with Citilink expanding routes within Sumatra, marking significant strides towards enhancing Batam’s air connectivity and accessibility as a top tourist destination.
