The Indonesian Air and Maritime Police (Polairud), in a coordinated effort with Baharkam Polri, have apprehended two Vietnamese fishing vessels in North Natuna Waters for illegal fishing activities, causing substantial financial loss to the country.

In a strategic operation guided by intelligence from the Command Center of Korpolairud Baharkam Polri and public reports, the Polairud successfully detained two foreign fishing vessels from Vietnam for illegal fishing activities in the territorial waters of North Natuna on October 22, 2023.

The Vietnamese vessels, KG 95514 TS and KG 94793 TS, were captured for lacking legal documentation like SIPI and SIUP, essential for fishing in Indonesian waters.

Authorities seized two foreign fishing vessels with a gross tonnage of 120, two sets of pear trawl nets, and approximately 650 kilograms of mixed fish.

The skippers, Mr. Ha Van Khoi of KG 95514 TS and Mr. Dang Van Bin of KG 94793 TS, are accused of planning to sell their illegal catch in Vietnam.

The suspects face charges under Articles 92 and/or 97 of the Indonesian Fisheries Law No. 31 of 2004, and Article 85 of Law No. 45 of 2009, with potential imprisonment of up to 8 years and fines reaching IDR 1.5 billion.

Illegal fishing activities by these vessels are estimated to have caused losses to Indonesia amounting to IDR 288 billion over their 15 years of operation.

The crackdown on illegal fishing in Indonesian waters, especially near Singapore, emphasizes the region’s commitment to safeguarding marine biodiversity and sustainable fishing practices. This action is crucial for maintaining ecological balance and ensuring the availability of seafood resources for Singaporeans and international visitors.

Indonesian authorities have arrested two Vietnamese captains and seized their vessels for conducting illegal fishing in North Natuna, leading to significant losses for the country. This operation underlines Indonesia’s dedication to combatting illegal fishing and preserving maritime resources, an effort that not only benefits local communities but also neighboring countries, including Singapore and their international guests.
